But that's because I woke up at 2:30am and then read a book until 5:30 and doomscrolled until 6:30. Then had a nap.

But it's lunchtime now, I have (mostly) survived the morning after a long weekend ("King's Birthday" long weekend), and I think I might end up skipping hockey training tonight because my knee has been feeling a bit weird the last couple of weeks and maybe I should go to the physio and get it checked out?

IDK. Maybe see how it holds up this weekend? We're already down one player that we're probably going to need...

I think I'm going to sign up for [community profile] iddyiddybangbang because I have a lot of exceedingly iddish stories that aren't going to get finished otherwise. I don't know if the creativity will come back, but I figure I should at least give it a go...

Now, the question of which story. Unfortunately most of the stories that I feel I want to finish and the ones that are half-done already. (Is the WIP Big Bang running this year? Anyone know?)

I know that I won't get many readers, I know that it's going to be something that not many people are going to read. I just want to get a few ideas out there.

Finished my 'the women sort out the MCU Civil War' fic.

Have a plan for the Psy-Changeling universe, it's gotten a little more complex.

Editing on the novel is going slowly; I just feel like it's boring and terrible and ugh. Which it might very well be. Are more dramatic things needed at this point? IDEK.

Writing on the new story is going to need at least one screen, preferably two. And a lot of editing. More ugh.

I really liked this writing prompt. I may actually noodle with it.

Finished my next [community profile] getyourwordsout Yahtzee story. Another 2477 words, most of it the brothers still fighting. (eye rolls) also got about 1060 on my original cryptid story only to learn I lost my cryptid source link. Whee.

Another day that got away from me

Mostly wrote and then had a surprise writers zoom meeting because I forgot we weren't doing them thursdays any more due to conflicts in half our schedules. I didn't do well but mostly because some fool lost the link to the big bad Pennsylvanian cryptid she wanted to use. Sigh. I could NOT find it again. I found the others I wanted to use as red herrings.

Still having blood sugar issues. Today's breakfast sent it almost to 400. By lunch I hit a critical low and then I knocked my damn monitor off again.

two hours later the monitor covers arrived from Amazon. In ONE day. I'm so not used to that (even Prime will not guarantee 1-2 shipping in my area).

Also in there was a book I ordered on Italian healing herbal meds and folklore/paganism. I've been testing herbs from other people's culture and looking so long at UK/Viking paganism because all I could find on Italy was Raven Grimassi who I did not like. I'm excited for this.

Let's share our music! It's music monday. I'm still doing the alphabet challenge and I'm up to J. I'm only doing the last 5 years but you can share whatever. This was not a good letter so I'm not even cutting it because there are so few. Also YT was on fire with recs today. Lately it's been doing nothing but AI music which is a no (even if it's fan tracks. I'll listen to it if the fan wrote the lyrics but otherwise not so much) I have several new bands to follow.

So, that's two events in a row that've been financial busts, and regrettably, between moves and stuff, we have no Pride events lined up.

So we made a Crisis Planning e-zine, which collates and cleans up all our crisis planning essays (and adds a little new stuff besides) and put it up for sale for $5.

Happy Pride.

Crisis Planning: Legal/Medical Stuff

Crisis Planning: Legal Stuff: Wills, Organ/Body Donations, and DNR/MOLST/POLST Forms
Series: Essay (Crisis Planning)
Summary: A guide to living wills, health care agents, organ/body donations, and DNR/MOLST/POLST forms (i.e., how to make sure you get the care you want and not the stuff you don't when you're unable to make your desires known).
Notes: Winner of the fan poll this month! If you want to support my work, join LiberaPay or Patreon and get double-weight for your votes. Also, these crisis plan essays have proven so popular (and regrettably necessary) that we have made a whole ebook of them up for sale for $5 here.

Nobody likes to think about this stuff, but seriously, think it over, especially if any of the following is a concern of yours:
• Ending up under the care of your abusers if medically incapacitated.
• Being denied medical care you need, leading to your “merciful” death.
• Making sure your loved ones know what to do if you’re in a coma.
• Donating your body to science.

I spent the hot summer evening as one does, watching Twilight in an alley projected against a bar

(I've still never read the books and only watched one of the films very recently. But, it sounded hilarious. They've got a Twilight drag event next. I'm debating going. The organizers and attendees were wonderful, but doing too many of these events as someone who isn't a fan feels odd. I got asked what 'team' I am and was confused for a moment.)

I honestly wish I edited better than I do.

It was rainy so I sat and wrote on my next [community profile] getyourwordsout Yahtzee story. These two are STILL arguing for another 2080 words

Writerly Ways

Jun. 8th, 2025 09:43 pm

[personal profile] cornerofmadness
Before I get into my writerly ways let me just say, diabetes is going to steer me around the bend. Today I was bad. I ate fries for lunch and pizza for dinner. My sugar is 90. Two days ago I ate nothing but proteins and my sugar was 360.... WHY?

So into the writing crap. I have been thinking about timing of scenes this week. Early this week I watched The Night House and finished reading The Witch's Orchard. Let me start with House. This was a horror movie and without spoiling too much, she is learning terrible things about her dead husband (while dealing with what she thinks is his ghost). After learning this, when the ghost wants to get frisky, she's into it.

And I'm thinking what woman who learns her husband might have been murdering women who look like her is going to want him touching all over her? Had this scene come before she learned this about her husband, maybe it would have hit they way they wanted it to (unless disbelief was their goal)

Same thing with Orchard, it went a place SO many stories have gone. The protagonist nearly gets killed, does get injured and then in spite of having her leg torn open and breaking in meth lab explosion fumes, feels like having sex. If there is one thing you'll see in my sex scenes, they don't tend to come after times like this because it makes no sense to me. I suppose the whole 'nearly died celebrate life' thing is a trope. It's just one that has me rolling my eyes. Having had some serious injuries, I can tell you sex is the last thing on my mind in those times.

In my novel (still need to get more betas on this) I DID mess up the timing. I ended up having to reorder things and expand some of the beginning in order for the timing to not feel off.

How do you handle timing? Do you find timing issues that bother you?

I finished up the trilogy while I was away. My main take-away is that the plot:pages ratio is wild.

No plot spoilers, but some plot structure talk )

Ending spoilers under the other type of cut
I had trouble vibing with the way the story resolved because Alina spent way more time homesick for the Little Palace or even the army tents than where they grew up. Them not feeling like they ever had a home was a recurring theme and even a plot point. Them going back and making it a home is a lovely idea, but it's kinda sad to me that they are mostly isolated from the other survivors and just have staff that think they are loony tunes.

Also, happy or tragic I wanted more resolution for poor Nicolai, who could only really be understood by Alina or maybe Mal. Even just as friends, I wish they where still in each other's lives and not just rare visits.

In certain ways the ending was beautiful and bittersweet, but I never got the impression that that's what Alina would want from anything in the previous pages of the series. Protect the kids and get away from positions of power? Sure, but actually run the orphanage herself? Have all the other adults, besides Mal, profoundly mis-understand her? I'm glad they are together and the place is under their control, but...idk maybe I'll feel differently if I read more of the books in the series or re-read them later.

Movies and TV Shows Round Up

* Leverage season 3 - I may do a longer post later, but overall the season was surprisingly hit and miss. The last two episodes were great, and The Polygiest Job had so many amazing things packed into it that it pretty much redeems the whole season.

Tho, of course we also got this banger skeet out of it:

* The Librarians The Next Chapter so far. Honestly? Better than I expected. I really like the new Librarian, and it's interesting that they are dealing with a somewhat regional problem not in America. The pilot's script wasn't translated well to production, way too much standing still and taking when those characters would have been taking action, but it's already tightening up. Also with two whole seasons already filmed, the show has a lot of time to find it's feet.

* The Fountain Of Youth, that new Guy Ritchie film I was so looking forward to. It's bad. It's not even bad in a fun way. Swell Entertain made made a 35 minute video on how annoying the film is, which I am not going to watch, but I am glad it exists. For me the problem is easy to sum up: imagine a film with a white male main character where everything is going to work out for him no matter how horrible, self absorbed and immature he is... but also make him genre-savvy. It's like the character knows he can pull whatever and be okay.

* Wolfs - Loved the trailer, the movie was okay. Part of it were solid, parts of it has my wondering why the fixers were being derailed by situations I could have gotten out of. I see what it was going for, but it wasn't there. It could have been a great movie, but it just wasn't there. Having two great actors who have worked together before really carried some weak points.

* Murderbot so far - Also hit or miss for me. I am just trying to enjoy the bits I like and the visuals. I will not be sad to lose access when I cancel AppleTV.
