So I've watched the Vampire Diaries Jenny Nicholson video like 3 times now, so I figured I might as well check the show out for myself. When it was first airing I was in elementary/middle school and I was a Twilight hater, so I had zero interest in it even though I knew of its existence. It seems trashy, to be sure, but it's the kind of dumb trash I would have been into as a teen and right now I'm looking for that sort of stuff. Anyway, thoughts!

Jenny was not kidding about the licensed pop music, jfc. They're just blasting it all over the place and significantly louder than the median volume. Hate!! The other thing about it is that it's very literal to the scene being presented, which is just kinda funny more than anything. In the video there was an example of a scene where Bonnie is talking to Elena's ex, encouraging him to talk to her, only for her to walk in with Stefan as the licensed music screams "I'm with him, I'm thinking of you" at the viewer. I kind of just assumed this was from a but later, when Elena and Stefan are officially dating, but nope! First episode! Not even past the halfway point! So like, the volume is distracting, but then it's extra distracting if I know the song playing, because I'm thinking "Wait, what is that? Is it... Running Up That Hill as covered by Placebo?" (it was) like I'm playing a music trivia game.

Not here to be a hater, though, I knew what I was going in for, just didn't expect it to be so much of that.

Anyway, so far I like the main characters; not in a deep way, but I do want to see their adventures. I think part of it is that I just find the actors cute, especially Nina Dobrev (and not just bc she's Bulgarian :p). Speaking of whom, I love how moody Elena is, it gives the show a slightly goth vibe, even if she's very much a normie. Also, Stefan comes off as kind of awkward a lot of the time, which amuses me greatly. I like how Damon is presented as a horror movie villain, with an opening scene kill and creepy scenery he apparently controls himself. I also liked the little bait-and-switch they did with them; I do kinda wish they'd kept it up for like an episode or two more, even though I get why they'd want to bring in all the main players in the first episode already.

So yeah, so far it's nothing too egregious besides the audio editing. Allegedly most of the supposedly nice main characters become jerks later on, but we'll see!
